CIECA organized the “2024 Taiwan Economic and Business Cooperation Mission to Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize” where they held bilateral meetings, make business matching, and pay on-site visits. The purpose of this mission is to help Taiwanese companies grasp the business opportunities in Central America while the global supply chains restructuring is underway. It also tried to help Taiwanese government join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement (CPTPP) and foster sustainable partnership with its diplomatic allies. The delegation headed by Mr. Mike Hung, Vice Chairman of CIECA consisting of 16 members from various industries including pharmaceuticals, electronics and motors, smart energy management, IoT, coffee, Netcom, steel, and finance. Key members of the delegation include Mr. Peter Chang, Chairman of e-Formula Technologies Inc.; Mr. Wang Jung-Pang, President of TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company (TWMC); Ms. Gloria Hsieh, VP of Business Development of China Chemical & Pharmaceutical Group (CCPC); etc. Mexico has a population of 130 million and a huge domestic demand market. The total two-way trade value between Taiwan and Mexico was US$6.368 billion in 2023. Taiwanese companies invest in Mexican industries including cloud computing, industrial servers, computers, LED, TV assembly, and auto parts. Mexico is a market economy and a member of the CPTPP. With the blessing of the USMCA free trade zone, Mexico has been the largest trading partner of the United States. For companies targeting the U.S. market, Mexico has the ad-vantage of being a link of the near-shore outsourcing supply chains. CIECA and Mexican Institute of Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology, A.C. (COMCE) co-hosted “the 19th Taiwan-Mexico Joint Business Councils Meeting” in Mexico City on August 29. The Meeting discussed CPTPP, land-scape of Taiwan’s pharmaceutical industry, TECO and its global out-reach, potential applications and benefits of AI, IoT, and ESG solutions, etc. The delegation also visited the Mexican Ministry of Economy, Mexican National Auto Parts Industry Association (INA), Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City (Canaco), the Employers' Confederation of the Mexican Republic (CCE). CIECA signed a memorandum of cooperation with the National Association of Importers and Exporters (ANIERM). Guatemala is Taiwan's important diplomatic ally in Central America and has a free trade agreement with Taiwan. The Guatemala government is now actively boosting the economy, exploring export markets, and supporting rural development to improve and increase job opportunities. “The 7th Taiwan-Guatemala Joint Business Councils Meeting” was held in Guatemala City on September 2. The two sides focused on discussing renewable energy, pharmaceutical industry, strategies for digital technology, and financial services both in Taiwan and Guatemala. In the afternoon, meetings between Taiwanese and Guatemalan Companies were arranged for seeking cooperation opportunities. During the visit in Guatemala, the delegation called on Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Economy; Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare; Leonel Rodas, Executive Director, Association of Guatemalan Pharmaceutical Industrial-ists (ASINFARGUA); and Anayté Guardado, Executive Director, Association of Renewable Energy Generators (AGER). These visits have furthered without any doubt the bilateral economic and trade relations and consolidated the friendship between the two countries. The last stop of the delegation was Belize, which is a diplomatic ally of ROC (Taiwan) and the only Central American country whose official language is English. In order to at-tract foreign investment, the Belize government has formulated investment incentives and established du-ty-free export processing zones. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Common Market and has signed free trade agreements with many countries. Its products have enjoyed preferential tariff treatment provided by the US-supported Caribbean Ba-sin Initiative (CBI). It thus has ad-vantages in exporting products to the United States, Central and South American and Caribbean countries. CIECA arranged a business match-making meeting for the delegation with the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) to promote cooperation between Taiwan and Belize enterprises. The Mission also visited the BELTRADE, an institution to promote Belizean trade and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Through these meetings both sides worked together to continue deepening private enterprises cooperation.
