The 37th Joint Conference of Australia-Taiwan and ROC-Australia Business Councils, was co-organized by CIECA and Australia-Taiwan Business Council (ATBC) and successfully held at Sofitel, Gold Coast Broad beach, Australia on August 8. The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Shyi-Chin Wang, Acting Chairman of the Board of China Steel Corporation and Chairman of RO-CABC/CIECA, Taiwan, and Mr. John Toigo, Chairman of the ATBC. Mr. Chen Chern-Chyi, Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs, ROC was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony with a prerecorded speech. Senator Tim Ayres, Assistant Minister for a Future Made in Australia and Assistant Minister for Trade; Mr. Douglas Yu-Tien Hsu, Representative, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia; and Mr. Cameron Dick, Deputy Premier and Treasurer of the state of Queensland, and Minister for Trade and Investment were invited to deliver greeting messages. They all recognized the importance of the economic cooperation between Taiwanese and Australian private enterprises as well as expressed the two governments’ support of this cooperation. It was worth noting that Mr. Thomas T.L. Wu, Chairman, CNAIC, particularly led a delegation coming from Indonesia to participate in the conference, which attracted a total of 186 participants from the industry, government, academia and research sectors in Taiwan and Australia.
The highlight of the meeting was the signing by ATBC and ROCABC of the Endorsement of Accepting Tai-wan to the Membership of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Mr. Douglas Yu-Tien Hsu, Representative, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia; National Legislator Chiu Yi-Ying, Chairperson, Tai-wan-Australia and New Zealand Inter-Parliamentary Amity Association; National Legislator Lee Po-Yi; and National Legislator Wu Pei-Yi witnessed the signing process. This year's conference has focused on five topics, namely “Critical Minerals,” “Energy Transition,” “Biotech,” “Advanced Manufacturing/Defense & Space” and “Cyber- security.” Two panel discussions--Energy Transition and Emerging Australia-Taiwan business leaders--have been organized for exploring two countries’ energy transition and innovative industry development. The Joint Conference of Australia-Taiwan and ROC-Australia Business Councils has been an important civil meeting between Tai-wan and Australia for nearly 40 years. It has provided a stable plat-form for government and business communities of both countries to jointly explore the two countries’ economic trends as well as industrial cooperation and future development via conducting in-depth discussions of mutually interested issues. CIECA will continue to work with the Australia-Taiwan Business Council to promote bilateral civil interaction and facilitate more substantive cooperation, in the hope that Taiwanese and Australian enterprises will work together to create more business opportunities and accomplish the common goals of the two countries.
